Disney could have dominated the entire box-office top 10 in 2019, if not for the fact Dumbo was a disappointment. This year has already been a recording-breaking one for Disney, with some major releases still to come, but it could’ve been even better if not for Tim Burton’s Dumbo.
Although Disney continues to create original content, most of their latest releases have been adaptations of comic book characters, sequels, reimaginings, and live-action versions of some of their animated classics – which is not all that bad, considering that most of them have been box office hits, with Avengers: Endgame becoming the highest-grossing film of all time. Disney is already at the top of the list for 2019’s highest-grossing films, but it could’ve been the absolute winner.
Disney currently has six titles in the top 10 of 2019 domestic grosses, ranging from sequels to live-action films: Avengers: Endgame, The Lion King, Captain Marvel, Toy Story 4, Spider-Man: Far From Home (although distributed by Sony, it was produced by Marvel Studios), and Aladdin. Next on the list is Jordan Peele’s Us, but it’s a big difference between this and Aladdin, so it’s safe to say the top 6 will remain Disney’s territory. The Mouse House has three more big releases in 2019: Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Frozen 2, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, all of them projected to be box office hits. If they make it to the top 10, that would leave one spot open, which could have been Dumbo’s.
Dumbo barely saved itself from being a box-office bomb, but it wasn’t enough to make it to the top 10 of the year. The film currently ranks at 15, right behind Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and is likely go down a few spots in the next months. Of course, given how well the rest of Disney’s films released this year have done, Dumbo’s situation is not a tragedy, but if the outcome had been different, Disney would have been in an even bigger position of power as the sole winner in the top 10.
By the end of 2019, Disney will have easily taken over at least half the top 10 list of highest-grossing films of the year, which is still a big statement on how big of an impact its films have, no matter if they are retellings of stories that were released years ago or sequels to the ever-expanding universes of Marvel and Star Wars.
