Jon Favreau says characters from The Mandalorian and other Disney+ Star Wars TV shows could crossover with upcoming movies. Though The Rise of Skywalker is set to conclude the iconic Skywalker saga, Disney is planning on keeping the franchise on the big screen. Earlier this year, they scheduled release dates for three Star Wars films in December 2022, 2024, and 2026, but it’s unknown what those will be. The latest word is Lucasfilm has a director for the 2022 movie, but they aren’t going to publicly discuss those plans until after The Rise of Skywalker premieres.
While the Star Wars movies are on hiatus, fans are still going to be able to enjoy plenty of new stories in the galaxy far, far away. Lucasfilm is taking great advantage of the Disney+ platform, producing a slate of live-action TV shows such as the ongoing Mandalorian (which is currently shooting season 2) and the recently confirmed Obi-Wan Kenobi miniseries. Looking to expand the franchise’s lore, these shows introduce new characters for audiences to fall in love with. For those hoping to see some make the leap from the small screen to the big screen, that remains a possibility.
Speaking with THR, Favreau addressed the chances characters from the Disney+ shows could appear in a new Star Wars movie. In his eyes, some kind of crossover is inevitable:
Lucasfilm’s used characters from the animated shows in movies before. Rogue One featured Saw Gerrera, who originally appeared in The Clone Wars. Even the infamous Maul cameo from Solo was possible only because The Clone Wars brought the villain back from his presumed death in The Phantom Menace. So, the studio is definitely open to crossing the streams and showing moviegoers that all areas of Star Wars media are part of the same canon. If characters from the live-action Disney+ shows are to make the jump to theaters, it would obviously depend on the stories the new films want to tell. It would arguably be difficult to integrate figures from the Cassian Andor or Obi-Wan series into a film, since those are set in close proximity to the original trilogy, limiting potential narratives. The Mandalorian, which fills in the gaps between the original and sequel trilogies, reads as the most likely one to have characters appear in a movie.
There’s definitely the opportunity to explore these characters beyond what we’ve presented on the show. There’s a very fluid line between what’s in the movie theaters and what’s on the screen at home. It’s very exciting for me because I get to tell stories over the course of several hours and not just within the footprint of one theatergoing experience. I think it’s only a matter of time before we cross paths the other way.
It’s worth keeping in mind Disney is working on other Star Wars shows for their streaming service, which remain closely guarded. There’s no telling what those series could be about, given the expansiveness of the Star Wars galaxy. Perhaps one of those shows will have an organic way to crossover with whatever new movies Lucasfilm has coming through the pipeline. Fortunately, it doesn’t sound like the studio is going to force anything for the sake of creating buzz. Any crossover between the TV shows and movies would likely need to be natural and serve the story in some way. It would be exciting if a possibility eventually presented itself.
