Sony’s Charlie’s Angels (2019) reboots the classic spy franchise, but does it have a post-credits scene setting up a sequel? And, if so, how many? Originally created as a television series in the 70s by Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts, Charlie’s Angels was rebooted as an action franchise with the 2000 movie Charlie’s Angels, which returned with the sequel Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle in 2003. However, when the sequel wasn’t successful enough to warrant a third outing, the franchise was rebooted again, this time for the short-lived ABC TV series in 2011. Now, Charlie’s Angels gets another reboot in the form of Elizabeth Banks’ new movie.
This latest incarnation of the classic franchise stars Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska as the new trio of angels: Sabina, Elena and Jane, respectively. But Charlie’s Angels isn’t a simple reboot, instead acting as a continuation of both the original 70s TV show and the 00s movies, taking the Townsend Agency into the future with multiple Bosleys and teams of Angels. In Charlie’s Angels, Banks plays one of the Bosleys in addition to writing and directing. Since fans got a first look at this Charlie’s Angels, it’s been a highly anticipated film for many and now it’s hitting theaters around the world.
Those checking out Charlie’s Angels in theaters may be wondering whether they need to stick around for any kind of credits scenes furthering the fun of the flick and/or setting up a sequel. Charlie’s Angels (2019) DOES have post-credits scenes; to be specific, it contains six mid-credits scenes, but nothing at the very end of the credits. While the credits are always worth watching to see who was involved in making a film, Charlie’s Angels moviegoers should expect six post-credits scenes.
Although we won’t spoil the six Charlie’s Angels post-credits scenes and what they mean for the movie here, it should be noted that they help to set up a potential sequel. It remains to be seen whether Charlie’s Angels will be successful enough for Sony to green light another movie, but Banks’ film seems positioned as a potential franchise-starter. Certainly, considering the legacy of Charlie’s Angels as both a blockbuster film series and classic TV show, it undoubtedly has potential as a viable movie property. But whether a sequel gets made largely depends on how viewers respond to this new Charlie’s Angels movie and team.
So far, Charlie’s Angels movie reviews have been decidedly mixed, with some praising it’s new take on the franchise while others weren’t won over by Banks’ writing/directing or the new cast. However, the response from casual viewers - and how that reflects in the film’s final box office cume - will likely be the deciding factor. Fans of the new Charlie’s Angels will have to wait and see if a sequel gets the green light. But for now, moviegoers checking out the new Charlie’s Angels movie in theaters need only know to stick around for all six post-credits scenes.
