The mind behind 2017’s surprise hit visual novel Doki Doki Literature Club has revealed that the game will be getting more content, potentially in 2020. Doki Doki Literature Club was created, written and developed by former Super Smash Bros Melee pro and Project M Development Team member Dan Salvato. In the game, the male protagonist is invited to join a literature and poetry club by a childhood friend who is worried about his social aversion and general aloofness. He subsequently builds his relationships with the club’s four female members.

From there Doki Doki Literature Club abandons standard kawaii and dating sim fare in favor of pure horror (for both the main character and the player). Inspired by Salvato’s love/hate relationship with anime and its cutesy tropes, as well as his interest in the surreal and the morbid, the game subverts players’ expectations in a major way by turning the dating sim genre on its head with an experience that breaks the fourth wall and becomes downright unsettling as its strange story unfolds. Doki Doki Literature Club came out of nowhere to amass millions of downloads and was a hit with gamers and critics alike.

Salvato announced his attention to build upon Doki Doki Literature Club via Twitter last week. In the tweet he made clear the fact that this is new content is either for or inspired by the original game and not a sequel of any kind. However, he did indicate that he would also be resuming work on a long-delayed second visual novel, although no other details have been made available regarding that project. Later in the week, Salvato also put out a call to his Twitter followers to tag conventions they would like him to visit this year as he brings Doki Doki Literature Club to different cities.

Salvato has indicated in the past that future DDLC content would aim to give players a deeper look into the game’s characters. He also indicated that his next visual novel would feature a “more comprehensive and diverse storyline” than what we saw in DDLC.

Although some fans are lamenting the fact that a Doki Doki Literature Club sequel doesn’t appear to be on-tap, the response to Salvato’s announcement of new content has been predictably positive. DDLC has a passionate fanbase; its sub-reddit has nearly 140,000 users, the game supports an active community of modders and its story and characters are still inspiring memes and fan fiction to this day. Whatever the new content and next VN end up being, they’re sure to generate the interest one would expect from the creator of such a groundbreaking title.
