The ending certainly teased a follow-up but is Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark 2 going to happen? The 1970s was a fertile period for creepy TV movies, which includes Steven Spielberg’s Duel and Something Evil, John Carpenter’s Someone’s Watching Me! and Trilogy Of Terror. Another gem from this era is 1973’s Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark. Despite being put together very quickly to beat a writer’s strike, the movie is an atmospheric and unnerving thriller that revolves around a couple who move into a mansion that’s home to some twisted little monsters.

Guillermo del Toro (Pacific Rim) went on to produce a remake of Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark in 2010, which starred Guy Pearce and Katie Holmes (Batman Begins). This Trey Nixey directed version had a couple and the father’s young daughter moving into an old mansion to restore it, only for the creatures hiding behind the fireplace to cause mischief. Despite featuring no gore or sex, the film still scored an R rating due to its intensity - a feat del Toro was proud of. Reviews for the remake were divided, with the performances and gothic atmosphere receiving praise, but the reliance on jump scares being criticized.

It’s ten years since the movie was released, so is Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark 2 going to happen?

Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark Ends On A Teaser

The finale of Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark has Katie Holmes’ Kim sacrifice herself to save young Sally, and she’s dragged into the dark by the creatures. The last scene has Sally leave a picture of Kim in the mansion before departing with her father, but it’s revealed Kim - who has been turned by the creatures - is in the fireplace, and tells the creature’s to wait until people forget and come back to the mansion.

Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark Was A Box-Office Disappointment

While Katie Holmes expressed interest in Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark 2 during a 2011 interview there was never any real sign one was being developed. While the ending of the first movie left the door open, the story also felt complete. It also doesn’t help it was a box-office letdown, grossing around $39 million on a $26 million dollar budget.

Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark 2 Won’t Happen

While a decent little horror movie, Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark has been all but forgotten since its release. With Guillermo del Toro focused on countless other projects like Nightmare Alley, it’s very hard to see him or any else involved with the project circling back to Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark 2.
