Doom Patrol season 2 casts the Chief’s daughter, Dorothy, choosing Abigail Shapiro for the role. Created by Jeremy Carver for the DC Universe streaming service, Doom Patrol is based on the superhero team of the same name. The series premiered in February 2019, following an unlikely alliance of heroes that all receive their powers through tragic circumstances. Niles Caulder, also known as The Chief, was pivotal to the show’s first season and propelled the plot forward in different ways. His capture, at the hands of Mr. Nobody, provided some of the basis for Doom Patrol’s initial batch of episodes. In the drama’s sophomore outing, which will air on HBO Max, in addition to DC Universe, the show will officially introduce the character of Dorothy who will likely reveal even more about The Chief.

Debuting in 1988, Dorothy was created by the trio of Paul Kupperberg, Erik Larsen, and Jim Sanders III. Given up for adoption when she was a baby, Dorothy suffered from a malformation that gives her the appearance of an ape. Though this deformity has varied, from mild to severe, depending on how the character is drawn, Dorothy grew up in isolation from society. She had only her imaginary friends to keep her company, eventually discovering that she had the ability to bring those friends to life. With the power to bring creation in and out of existence, a significant ability that could be used for both good and evil, Dorothy has had a rocky run in the comics. It’s possible that Doom Patrol season 2 will explore this history when it premieres, though Dorothy has already made an on-screen appearance.

In the season 1 finale of Doom Patrol, “Ezekiel Patrol”, the character briefly shows up on camera. It is only the back of her head which is shown, in pigtails, setting up an arc for the comic book adaptation’s sophomore outing. Now, TV Line reports that Abigail Shapiro has been tapped to appear in Doom Patrol season 2 in a recurring capacity as the 11 year-old Dorothy Spinner. Shapiro is a new face to the world of television, having starred previously in Broadway-related shorts.

The character’s description does not shed light on any potential deformities. Notably, however, it is mentioned that The Chief has gone to great lengths in order to protect the world from his daughter’s abilities and will continue to do so more vehemently now that she is no longer hidden. In the comics, Dorothy is often exploited by the Candlemaker. Nefarious and deceptive, this storyline could come into play which would make Dorothy an unwitting accomplice to the Candlemaker’s evil acts.

Regardless of what direction Doom Patrol takes with Dorothy Spinner in the long run, it is certainly a high-profile gig for Shapiro in her first small screen role. The actress is likely to share scenes with some veteran performers, including Alan Tudyk and Matt Bomer, while portraying a young hero with a complex backstory.
